3 Myths of Mediumship. Unveiling the Mystery
Mediumship doesn’t have to be such a mystery, which is why I wanted to share some insight into just a few of those myths.
Myth #1: If you are a medium, you must see spirits everywhere.
I’m not sure if the answer to this one is a relief or a disappointment to some, but the reality is mediums don’t see spirits everywhere. In fact, for some mediums, actually seeing a spirit may be rare. There are several senses mediums use to connect with those in the spirit world, and clairvoyance, which means clear seeing, is only one of those senses.
In my Awaken Your Ability class, we learn about and work with all the senses so students can recognize which “clairs” (senses) they work best with. Even if a medium’s clairvoyance is strong, most of us aren’t seeing spirits throughout our day. If we were, we would surely be a bit overwhelmed. Most trained mediums can easily turn the ability off and on. As I always explain to students, the spirit world respects our boundaries, and if they want their loved ones to come to us for a message, they’ll work their magic to arrange it. Approaching people in public places with messages from spirits would be an invasion of those people’s privacy, so I usually only connect to the spirit world when I’m working, practicing (yes, I practice quite a bit, which is explained under Myth #3) or when I want to have a private conversation with my guides.
Myth #2: If you are a medium, you’ve known it your whole life.
I’ve worked with mediums from around the world, and one thing I know is we all have a different story about how we became aware of our ability.
Some of us may have been connecting with the spirit world as children, but we might not have known it was different from what our siblings or friends were able to do. We may have figured it was normal. Others of us didn’t recognize the ability until the loss of a loved one later in life. Some experienced other traumatic events that awoke the ability. The different circumstances can go on and on. My point is, we weren’t all talking to spirits from day one (or at least we may not have recognize what we were doing). I recall the first time someone called me a medium; I was 40 years old. Sure, before that I could “somehow” get information about people who had passed or share details about things that had happened or were to come, but I always thought it was a coincidence. I wasn’t even sure I believed in this stuff. It took a lot of persuasion from the Universe / God (insert your choice of terminology here) to get me to let go of my doubts and commit to my soul’s purpose. So, if you’ve wondered about the possibility that you could have mediumistic abilities, you’re not alone. The best way to find out is to learn more about it and give it a go.That doesn’t mean you have to dart right out there and start giving readings professionally; in fact, I would advise against that, but there are lots of books, classes (online or in your area) and Facebook groups that give you the opportunity to learn more and practice with others who are wondering the same thing about themselves.
Myth #3: If you are supposed to be a medium, it just happens.
I believe the Universe has a way of pushing us along our path. For some of us, it takes longer to be open to following that path or there are certain learnings or healings that have to happen first. (Hence, me being more than 40 years old by the time I was ready to surrender.) But the mediumistic ability does not come easy or without hard work.
While it may be something deeply ingrained within our DNA, it’s not something we can just snap our fingers and know how to use to its capacity. I recently read a book (Finding Your Way in a Wild New World) by Martha Beck in which she pointed out that to become proficient in something, we need to practice at least 10,000 hours. If you do the math, that breaks down to five and a half hours a day, every day for five years, or if you want to do it faster… 13.5 hours per day every day for one year.
Mediumship is just like every other ability, it takes practice, practice, practice. Some people don’t necessarily want to take the mediumistic abilities they were born with to the professional level, and that’s OKAY. Not everyone with mediumistic abilities was meant to use them for professional purposes; some were given the ability to utilize them in their personal life or as an added bonus to other abilities they have. No matter what the purpose for your intuitive or mediumistic abilities, it’s always helpful to understand the fundamentals of them and how they can assist you in everyday life. If you’re curious about learning to use the intuitive abilities you were born with and exploring the world of mediumship, there are plenty of books and classes available. And if you’d like me to share some of those resources, just reach out. The Awaken Your Ability. An Introduction to Mediumship class I created (or, I should say, my guides created, but I’ll share more about that in another blog?) is offered in-person three times a year in Charleston, and an on-line version will be launching in early 2020. Keep an eye on my website for updates or, if you’d like to get automatic updates via email, just join my email list. If this class doesn’t call to you, but you’d like some recommendations for classes offered by other mediums, let me know. There are a lot of great mediums / teachers out there. You just need to follow your intuition to find the ones for you!

About me
As an intuitive medium, one of my greatest joys is in helping people understand mediumship, so when people ask me questions, I’m excited to share what I’ve learned through my own experiences. My goal is not to persuade people to believe what I believe, but only to offer a new perspective; one that feeds your curiosity, discredits the fear-based myths and helps people understand their own experiences.

While many psychic mediums can probably read minds, there are lots of reasons we don’t, including ethics and energy.
